This week, young poets, rappers and sonnet fans from Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island high schools gather at the Roundhouse Community Centre for Hullabaloo, otherwise known as the B.C. Youth Spoken Word Festival. Sadly, Hullabaloo didn’t exist when we were in high school and subsequently our passion for poetry waned… like a sunfish trapped inside a bell jar.
But we’ve unearthed some of our best high school poems in hopes that we can rekindle the fire that once burned inside us. Here’s a sample:
“Thoughts”
Looking good in my new Pelican Cove
jeans from Bootlegger.
Gotta save my allowance for that sweet
shaker knit sweater.
Wish I had Lamborghini Countach or
some other wicked car
like the one in Hardcastle
and McCormick.
Or even Simon and Simon.
Tacos for dinner rule.
“Pantaloons… Quand bien?”
Been wondering lately,
Why does Monsieur Gravalle wear
the same brown slacks, day in, day out?
Does he have multiple pairs
of the same coloured slacks?
Or does he stink like Mr. Monaghan
who apparently has a gland problem?
That would be sad.
